Big Cypress Bayou, Jefferson Texas

Big Cypress Bayou runs between Lake of the Pines and the Caddo Lake area. This particular route launches under the Highway 59, Walcott Street bridge in Jefferson Texas and goes upstream to a point where I was starting to worry how much light would be left in the day by the time I got back. It is also possible, if water levels are right, to do a point to point from below the dam to Jefferson but you would need a shuttle. The paddle here was easy and nicely scenic, and I saw a few odd things (see pictures).

Above: This turtle didn’t know or didn’t care that I was right there.

Above: Caught a train crossing the bridge just upstream of the Hwy 59 launch.

Above: Alligator on the Big Cypress Bayou above Jefferson!

Above: Seven dead pigs dumped along the banks of the Bayou, very strange.
