Dewey Wills WMA A

The Dewey Wills WMA is a large area east of Alexandria, Louisiana that has many paddling possibilities. The area is bounded on the north by the large Caahoula Lake, on the south by Saline Lake, and the east by Larto Lake. The route above started on the west side at a private launch ($5) at the end of Open Bayou Road, and went north along several north-south bayous. This was a long paddle with multiple out and back branches. It was summer, and in the heat, but fortunately some of the channels were well shaded. As the first picture below shows, some turnarounds were muddy. Many DIY paddle routes could be designed in this WMA, it is so large, especially routes along Muddy Bayou in the center of the WMA, and those that start from launch points near Larto Lake to the east. My trip here was a bit restricted due to very low water levels, but it’s an extensive area that could be paddled and explored for days.
