East Fork Trinity River, Lake Lavon, Highland Park

The north end of Lake Lavon is split into a west side and an east side. The launch on the west side is at Highland Park. From here you can access Wilson Creek and the East Fork of the Trinity River. The East Fork runs into Lake Lavon, then into Ray Hubbard, and eventually into the Trinity River well below Dallas. From the Highland Park launch you can go at least partway up Wilson Creek, although there was a beaver dam that I didn’t cross. And you can paddle east to find the mouth of the East Fork where it enters the lake. Once I tried this and I could only get up upstream a short distance before I encountered a huge logjam. Another time I couldn’t find the entrance to the river due to the shallow water and all the brush. For the trip here I managed to find the right channel and made it to the turnaround at FM546/Lowry Crossing. This was a pretty tough paddle with five or six muddy portages up (and back). It took some determination to finish the job. The water was muddy, the banks were muddy, the boat was muddy, and the paddler was muddy. Satisfying on completion though.

Above: Great area to paddle through.

Above: Deer watching and wondering.

Above: Through brush and shallow water, trying to hit the entrance to the East Fork.

Above: Moving along.

Above: It was like this by the end.

Above: A good-sized jam, but this one was actually pretty easy to get around.
