Galveston Island State Park Kayak Paddle

The TPWD site suggests a coastal kayak trail at Galveston Island State Park, and the route above is a modification that does it in one shot. The park on the north side of San Luis Pass Road is a nice place for tent camping, although it’s sometimes windy, with the tents flapping away. The other side, towards the gulf, often seems close packed and quite busy. The above route guesses its way through the clumps of sea grass. It’s basically a counterclockwise loop with four straight-in approaches to the shore, each ending with a yellow turnaround dot. The park has several hiking trails which go around the freshwater ponds inside the park. They are good trails and it’s pretty easy to see alligators in the ponds.

Above: Very pretty.

Above: Big sky.

Above: Pelicans on the rocks.

Above: Houses/condos/rentals just opposite the launch site. Everything on the island is painted in pastel, a debatable choice.
