Hugo Lake WMA, Kiamichi River, Oklahoma A

The Hugo WMA located between Antlers and Hugo Oklahoma was a total surprise. It’s close to Dallas (~2 hr) and has multiple kayak trail options (all DIY of course, and labeled here as A, B, C…etc.). The map above traces the first one I did, launching down a dirt road off of Highway 93 called Twin Oaks Access Road. Primitive camping is permitted at a few sites near the launch but I didn’t stay there. This particular route goes north under the Highway 93 bridge, then up into a creek that twists back and forth as it makes its way north, finally reaching the Kiamichi River. Whether this can be done easily or not depends on the water level, and even when it’s high some portages around blockages will likely be required, especially at the Kiamichi junction (see pictures). In shallow water the area will be more restricted in terms of route options. Also the Waterfowl Refuge area is closed during the fall and winter and boating is not allowed. The Kiamichi River although fairly wide still feels isolated and wild, making the whole round trip feel especially remote. Nice place!

Above: These pigs were crossing the river from right to left but saw the boat and turned to make a mad dash back to shore.

Above: This raccoon was eating a large dead fish that was caught in the branches over the water.

Above: One of several blockages in the creek even when the water is high.
