John Wiggins Bayou, Lost River, Hugo Point Park

Even after multiple trips in the Trinity River bottom area I am still a bit confused as to how everything relates positionally to everything else. Which in a way is a good thing because then there is more to do. Several trips in this area launched out of Hugo Point County Park, south of I-10 at Cove. I went to the Park once during hunting season and the boat launch must have had 50, 60 trucks in it, so I left. However, usually it’s less busy and, turns out, is a terrific place to launch north into Old River, Lost River, and Lost Lake. There is a mile or two paddle across the lake up to the I-10 bridge to get there, and the same on the way back. The paddle to and from the bridge is pretty shallow and you hit mud when you get too close to shore. The goal for this trip was to explore John Wiggins Bayou. John Wiggins branches off of Lost River to the east and you can go way up, there’s a a lot to explore. I found a connection from the bayou back into Old River and so I took the river back down, exploring some channels on the west side as well. So many alligators here. I could do this again and not remember anything, it’s so complicated it would all be new again.
