Lake Conroe, West Fork San Jacinto Kayak Paddle

This trip launches at the designated “Canoe Access 1” on Stubblefield Lake Road 215 at the north end of Lake Conroe. Lake Conroe is about 10 miles west of I-45 between Huntsville and Conroe Texas, and 50 miles or so north of Houston. The route goes up into the West Fork of the San Jacinto River and does a loop down at the lake as well. Parking at the launch was a bit limited the time I went, a lot of people were out fishing. Also, upstream, the amount of duckweed and/or watermeal on the river was astonishing, a tub of green. This is a pretty nice little paddle especially if you live in the area, and I saw a couple other guys paddling. I saw no alligators however, and a guy at the launch site who I chatted with said he fished there a lot and had also never seen one (…he had heard of one though).

Above: A few workarounds were needed to get further up the river.
