Atchafalaya, Lake Fausse Point SP Louisiana A

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park is located a bit east of Lafayette LA, and about 20 miles south down Levee Road which hugs the west side of Bayou Chene. This was the first time I had been here; I camped two nights. Food options are limited near the park so (next time) bring something to eat. The route above is basically a circle that follows a suggested park trail, but includes as many possible out and back side channels. Those all dead-ended at some point and the pinned turnaround points are shown as yellow dots on the map. Some of the channels that looked good by satellite were, on-site, not doable. There are gators, gators, and more gators here, which makes it quite a bit of fun. Their presence is routine, especially in comparison to northern TX/LA/AR where populations aren’t as dense. This is after all part of the enormous Atchafalaya basin and real Louisiana swamp. The channels around the park were pretty active with motorboats but so it goes, there is plenty of space. There is also a large lake to the West, Lake Fausse Pointe, for which the park is named, and other access points to the swamps to the east, but those will be for another time.

Above: Looks more or less like this.

Above: Lake-front cabins for rent at the park.

Above: It doesn’t work. And there was no leftover change in the coin return.

Above: Something is there.
