Lake Lewisville, Pecan Creek, Elm Fork Trinity

This kayak canoe route launches at the Shady Shores/Big Sandy Boat Ramp and goes north in Lake Lewisville into Pecan Creek, the Old Elm Fork of the Trinity, and partway up the current Elm Fork. Pecan Creek is close to the launch and easy to explore, it’s nice and twisty. The entrance to the Old Elm Fork is straight north of Camp Copass and can be entered at the south end of the little ‘peninsula’ that sticks down into the lake. I have been up here several times and it always has a kind of spooky silent feel to it. It does run dry at about the point of the yellow dot in the map. Lake Lewisville is big open water and can be calm as it was on this trip and as the some of the pictures below show, but more often it’s breezy or windy on the lake. So it’s smart to stay near the shore, especially when the water is cold. Not only that, there can be fast motorboats with strong wakes that don’t always notice small paddle boats. Note that entrance to the ‘real’ Elm Fork is sometimes shallow, and you can only go up to the point of a big log jam.
