Little River, Millwood Lake, Arkansas B

Another paddle trail in the fantastic Little River/Millwood Lake area of southern Arkansas, again starting at Yarborough Landing. I launched early in dense fog, visibility only 75 feet or so, and held close to the shore early on so as not to be hit by a powerboat. Things cleared up later, just beautiful. Some of the small lakes in the northern part of the route are spectacular, although surface vegetation does overrun some areas. A picture below also shows a night paddle excursion into Pond Creek near the primitive campsite where I stayed. Earlier that evening a big gator slowly drifted from one end of this pond to the other, moving N to S and carefully watching the campsite area. But later, in the dark, on the water, I saw no reflective eyes, and I am here to tell of it, so he had evidently moved on. Another picture below shows one of weirdest things ever,…a snake way way up on a dead cypress tree trunk, climbing (squishing?) higher and higher, looking hole by hole for eggs or hatchlings, I suppose. The body convolutions are crazy, and it almost fell off several times. Super trip.

Above: Incredible.

Above: So rich, fog just starting to lift.

Above: Most amazing thing…snake is climbing tree, looking in holes.

Above: Will keep clear of the nest.
