Loggy Bayou WMA Kayak Trip

Below the dam at Lake Bistineau is the Loggy Bayou WMA. There is a launch for Loggy Bayou at the end of Poole Road off of Highway 71. I tried another access to the launch from the north side but that road was private or blocked off. So I rerouted via Poole Road. Louisiana WMAs have a two permit system, an annual WMA pass and an on site day use permit that you return when you’re done. Loggy Bayou is essentially a muddy flatwater paddle as seen in the pictures below. Upstream of the launch the river splits and I took the right-hand branch. This channel narrows quite a bit as you go up, and towards the dam things get shallow and weedy. After evaluating the options I turned around and headed back the same way I came. I think that perhaps the left hand channel would be easier to paddle up to the dam, but I didn’t take it very far. I did see an alligator up towards the dam so that was a nice surprise.
