Neches Colliers Ferry Beaumont B

A canoe kayak paddle trail launching out of Colliers Ferry just to the east of Highway 96 in Beaumont Texas. Unlike the TPWD trail out to Lake Bayou, this one explores a bunch of the linear canals that branch off at various points. These are all out and backs but they are kind of interesting actually, and it’s satisfying to complete the set. The turnarounds are low oxygenated pools of stagnant water. In these pools I have seen fish swim around together at the surface, gulping, doing some sort of synchronized air breathing, very curious. Bunns canal runs northwest to southeast but at the north end there are keep out signs. One wouldn’t see those unless you tried to launch specifically there. The route also goes into the Cooks Lake/Scatterman area (there is a short TPWD trail there), and it transits the Neches Salt Water Barrier, a unique experience. Nice paddle.

Above: A picture had to be taken of this, so great.
