Sabine Island WMA C

Another kayak paddle trip out of Niblett’s Bluff Park in Louisiana into the Sabine Island WMA area. Here the plan was to go up the Old River, do some sort of loop, and come back around. The water was pretty fast however. Progress upstream was fine as long as you took some care with the eddies under the boat, particularly in the turns where the current hits hard when you crossover, and as long as you didn’t have a mis-stroke. But, the penalty for tipping on powerful flatwater like this is a long trip downstream, probably a lot farther than you expect, and probably without the boat. So I turned around; this plan will be left for another day. Instead, I went up into the Lundy Slough area. Turned out great. Because the water was high some of the narrow interior sloughs that run north-south through the island, and which can be seen by satellite map, were flowing well. The revised route goes up one of them on the east side of the island, and down another one just to the west. It was an exciting route and kind of improvised and estimated as ‘approx. channel’ on the map. Great day, and there are lots more paddling choices yet to do in this WMA.

Above: Somewhere inside the island, moving good.

Above: Rats.

Above: Another long canal picture.

Above: May not look too fast but it’s going pretty quick, it’s high against the shoreline and you can see bubbles.
