Steinhagen, Martin Dies SP E

Kayak paddle trail route map at Steinhagen Martin Dies. If this looks complicated it is. It’s a fairly intricate Steinhagen route out of Martin Dies SP. The path and directions taken are shown as red lines, and the arrows allow retracing of the actual route taken. That is to say its a kind of puzzle where the rule is you have to do all the red lines but you can’t go against any arrow in the opposite direction. The point was to explore the many small, hidden channels that connect Steinhagen with the Neches River. Those connections are complex, and this was a challenging paddle with some dead-ends, difficult areas, and a brushy portage. But, great fun! These are exciting paddles. Having not said it in any earlier trip description, I should add that Martin Dies is one of the nicest state parks in Texas.

Above: An alligator in this small channel came up towards me very quickly, to investigate. Then it sat and watched.

Above: Pull boat.

Above: In some channels their are spiders overhead that weave webs between trees on each side.

Above: Hard going. Probably had to get out and pull or turnaround here.
