Steinhagen, Martin Dies State Park G Kayak Paddle Trip

Kayak route at Steinhagen Reservoir, Martin Dies State Park. The reservoir was at full pool and the Neches was flowing pretty strong. This trip was mid summer after a wet windy spring and after Beryl. The channels within the swamp are usually pretty narrow but this time they held a lot of water and were flowing strongly. There were trees down in places, or tilted over, from strong winds earlier in the year, and the woods looked like they had flooded pretty good. It felt like the area needed a bit of a breather. In addition to checking out paddle paths in the swamp the route also went down to the lake, just to mix it up at bit. The arrows on the red route lines show the directions. There was almost no salvinia, surprisingly, but there was a lot of water hyacinth (even worse), and alligator weed. Cool weather for a summertime trip though, and some nice pictures.

Above: The mayflies were out in force (briefly).

Above: This would normally be couple boat lengths wide.

Above: Double rainbow at Steinhagen Reservoir.

Above: The Neches is moving pretty well.

Above: Thread waisted wasp I think. It pulled a sedated? caterpillar down this hole, buried it alive, and then carefully eliminated all traces of the crime.
