Texas Point NWR, Sabine Pass Kayak Paddling Trip

A kayak map and trail at the Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge. Something about the map makes it look upside down but it’s right as is. I initially didn’t think this place would amount to much, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. Texas Point NWR is the very tip of southeastern Texas. The launch is at the 1st Avenue Boat Ramp which gives access to a large network of channels in the refuge. There are a lot of routes that could be plotted and paddled here. And while the Sea Rim trail is down the road, that trail doesn’t offer as much variation in route choice. The scenery here is nice, good sky views, quite a few alligators, and evidently a popular place for kayak fishing. The water tasted salty but I wonder if some of the interior ponds and pools might be fresher. The route in the map above is a first try here: it does an out and back through Pole Lake, then continues up that channel as it gets thinner and thinner and stops at Cattlewalk Trail. I also did a small loop near the launch just to see how things look in a different direction. Sea Rim State Park was actually closed when I drove by, post-Beryl, and Texas Point NWR was excellent. Will do it again.
