Lake Eufaula, Hickory Point Rec Area, Brushy Creek
Kayak paddle trail route map starting from the Hickory Point Rec Area boat launch at the southeast corner of Lake Eufaula in east central Oklahoma. The route goes east from the launch then at the Brushy Creek/Gaines Creek junction it takes Brushy Creek down to US 270. An out and back paddle of about 20 miles total round trip, a bit under five hours. Lake Eufaula was at 583 feet which is a couple feet down so many of the little side lakes were either very shallow or just mudflats. The turnaround was just past the US 270 bridge; at that point the creek narrowed and became rocky and loggy. Hickory Point is managed by the COE and the land adjacent the creeks is mostly part of the Gaines Creek Arm of the Eufaula WMA. Saw quite a few Canadian Geese, and some beavers.

Above: Something was swimming across the river, heads in the water. Usually this will be…deer, coyotes, beavers, pigs. But this time…dogs, three of them, and very purposeful climbing the bank. Didn’t respond to a whistle whatsoever. Expand picture to see.
