Little River, AR, Hwy 71 Wilton Landing Launch, up
Kayak trail route map on the Little River launching off of Hwy 71 at the Wilton Landing Boat Ramp in Arkansas. An America the Beautiful interagency hangtag is needed (or pay at the kiosk). The route goes up the river to a turnaround point at the three hour mark (13 miles up). At that spot there is supposed to be a Pond Creek NWR campsite on the north side but the banks are steep and it can’t really be seen. The upstream gage, Little River at Horatio, read between 600 and 700 during the trip, rising. For some reason the flow readings show clusters of oscillations separated by periods of steady current, maybe it’s a designed release schedule from Broken Bow dam. The boat ramp area is where the river starts to meet Millwood Lake and is swampy and sprawling, but upstream things are more linear and river-like with shallows and gravel bars. Saw deer, pigs, turkeys, handful of gators, and a bald eagle.
