Manchac WMA, Galva Canal, Lake Maurepas, Old US51
Kayak route map that explores the Galva Canal area just south of Pass Manchac in the Manchac WMA of Louisiana and just off of Interstate 55. By chance someone let me launch near the entrance to the canal. Otherwise it may be possible to put in at Sunset Park across the highway and go up and around to reach the canal. The water levels were up about a foot and the entire lake (designated on the Manchac WMA map as ‘the prairie’) was paddleable. Coastal areas like this with low lying grassy shorelines tend to look the same from all directions and it’s important to remember exactly where the canal enters the lake.
