Sabine River, Highway 155 Launch, down

Kayak trail route map on the Sabine River, northeast of Tyler and west of Longview, launching under the Highway 155 bridge. There is no boat ramp here, just a dirt (mud) underpass area where you park and then slide the boat down to the river. No problems. The route goes downstream first, for two hours, then back up for 2 hour 45 min, maybe 21 miles total. Flow of the Sabine nr Hawkins read 265 cfs, the Sabine nr Gladewater read 515 cfs. Bit of current coming back but not bad. Beautiful day, nice paddle, pigs, gar, a snapping turtle stuck its big block head out near the boat, deer, and several alligators (one pic below). Even though this stretch is not bounded by conservation areas like some of the upstream regions it’s still quite nice.

Above: The Highway 155 launch, park here and drop the boat into the water.

Above: Old schoolbus parked in the woods by the river. I’m guessing there was a plan, …at first.

Above: Turn left.

Above: Turn right.

Above: One of several alligators.

Above: I think these are turtle tracks. The softshells often bask up on the bank and run like mad to the shore. The females get pretty big.
