Sabine River, nr Longview, Highway 42 Launch, up

Kayak paddle route map on the Sabine River launching at the Highway 42 crossing just southwest of Longview TX. The trip goes up about 10 miles, and back, roughly 3 hours up and 2 hours back. Flow rate USGS gage at Gladewater was about 1110 cfs. Perfect day for a paddle, no wind, slight current. Saw pigs of course, and some really big alligator gar, sometimes right near the boat. Scenic spring paddle, everything so green.

Above: Google satellite maps shows an apparent ramp at the Hwy 42 crossing. And there is a dirt road down to the river just to the right of this, but it was gated and evidently private. The other option was to drive through what you see above and get stuck. Instead I parked the car and pulled the boat down to the river. So its not a real launch, but its usable.

Above: A few high cliffs along the way.

Above: Tree with a ladder nailed in and a rope swing. If the water was a bit warmer, and if I was a bit younger…

Above: Some pigs on the bank nosing around.

Above: Perfect day.

Above: Oil, or gas, derricks near the Hwy 42 launch.
