Sabine River, Swede Johnson Rec Area, North Toledo Bend WMA
Kayak trail route map launching from the Swede Johnson Rec Area onto the Sabine River just above Toledo Bend Reservoir. This launch is a bit north of the Bubba Cowser launch used in an earlier trip but still off of FM139 (which has good curves for driving). The west/south shore of the river would be the Texas side (North Toledo Bend WMA), while the east/north side is Louisiana. The route goes towards the reservoir and explores various out and back channels along the way. One portage (pull boat dot on map) was done to get across to the north end of an internal inlet. Pretty area, saw one beaver, one otter, couple small alligators, some black vultures. Thought there would be more gators but maybe it’s too hot right now. Total trip about 16 miles, 100 degree day. The Sabine River at Logansport about 600 cfs +/- 100, the reservoir 94% full.
