Sulphur River, White Oak Creek WMA, TX 67 Launch A

Kayak paddle trail route map on the Sulphur River, upstream of Wright Patman Lake. The route is an out and back, upstream first, launching from the public ramp on Hwy TX 67. There is an alternate paddle boat launch just beyond the turnaround point (blue dot); its down a rutted little side road off of 4507 and isn’t much to look at. There wasn’t much wildlife on this particular trip but it was still very scenic. The pictures show that the river has lots of fallen trees and debris but, surprisingly, there were only two or three actual portages, all very short, which was pretty lucky. Most of the log falls could be paddled through, at least at these low water levels (Sulphur RIver at I30 Dalby Springs only about 21 cfs, almost nothing). There is a nice gravel road drive, 4507, just northeast of the launch site on TX67. The drive follows the wooded WMA region and takes you pretty close back up to I-30. Nice paddle on a great section of river.

Above: Perfect.

Above: Interesting.

Above: One of the short pull arounds needed during the trip.

Above: Someone’s chainsaw bar and chain got bound up while trying to cut through a huge tree blocking the river. It’s not coming loose anytime soon.

Above: Two of them. I crawled up on top and looked upstream…

Above: …to see more of the same. So this was the turnaround spot for the trip back.
