Wallace Lake, Cameron Park, Shreveport LA, B

A second kayak route trip map out at Wallace Lake, launching from Milton James Cameron Park just south of Shreveport, LA. I drove from Dallas early on a Saturday morning and there was nobody else at the launch, kind of surprising. The goal for this trip was to head down to the Wallace Lake Dam, but the salvinia stopped progress at the point of the yellow dot turnaround shown on the map. After turning the boat around, which wasn’t easy, I followed the west ‘coast’ back up towards the launch site, exploring all the nooks and crannies that I could. The route then goes up to the I-49 bridge and into a lake there, and finally returns to the park to load the boat for the drive back back to Dallas. Like Caddo, the shoreline of Wallace Lake is not always easy to get to so you mostly paddle in and around the cypress. Beautiful day, cool, a nice North Louisiana swamp paddle. Wallace Lake level at 144.57.

Above: Big beaver lodge, this one looks like it’s built for high water, an entryway is exposed.

Above: It was so hard to get through the salvinia this far, but even then I couldn’t see open water ahead so…turnaround. It took about 70 paddle strokes to turn the boat 180 degrees to go back. The surface was so thick the egrets and other birds were walking on it. This stuff wrecks boating.

Above: Probably buttonbush, I hate this stuff.
