Washita River, Tishomingo WMA, Rattlesnake River Access, OK

The kayak trail route above follows the Washita River starting at the Rattlesnake River Access located within the Tishomingo WMA area of Oklahoma. The trip was against the current on the out leg (~1250 cfs Washita at Dickson) and against a pretty stiff south wind on the back leg. The turnaround was an upstream railroad bridge. The river was quite wide throughout, I don’t know if a lower flow rate would be more interesting and meandering, or maybe more difficult against low water riffles. Note that the Rattlesnake River Access point on the map is a steep drop, one of the pictures shows the spot, and several other access sites (McAdams Pond and Clifton) might be better choices. The banks of the river were super muddy as the river had been falling for several days prior. Today’s color theme: Iron-oxide Orange.

Above: Wow!

Above: A picture of the boat in the water from the top of the Rattlesnake River Access. It’s a ways down, and muddy.

Above: Lone deer swam across the river and watched me a bit after it reached the shore.

Above: There was lots of digging along the banks.

Above: I would like to know what made this, and where it was going. A turtle perhaps?
