Above: Overview map of some kayak route locations in the Atchafalaya Basin. This massive area lies between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, and just north of Morgan City, LA. Incredibly big, the scale of the place is amazing. The Atchafalaya River flows out from a point north where the Red River meets the Mississippi River, a kind of release valve. Many beautiful areas, but many areas logged, canalized, private. A lifetime of routes is possible, I tried a little bit here, a little bit there.
